Topic: Updates from the State Veterinarian :: Veterinary Feed Directive, Rabies, and more!
Presented by James Averill, DVM PhD
State Veterinarian and Director, Animal Industry Division
Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development
Dr. Averill, our Michigan State Veterinarian, is coming to speak to us about the recent changes to the FDA Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD), as well as other current and timely matters for veterinarians in the state of Michigan.
Historically, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), who regulates the use of medicine in animals, has allowed select antibiotics used in animal feed to be available to producers over-the-counter and without the direct supervision of a licensed veterinarian. The FDA’s Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) is a part of the FDA’s overall directive to ensure the judicious use of human medically important antibiotics. Recently, the VFD category was expanded to include medically important antibiotics fed to animals. The revised VFD policy (effective January 1, 2017) puts into place important control factors that dictate the appropriate use of feed-grade antibiotics.
Why does this matter to YOU?
- These regulations also apply to any ‘food-producing animal’ that could be consumed by humans. That includes (but is not limited to): pet rabbits, backyard chickens, pet/pot bellied pigs, etc.
- Additionally, many previously over-the-counter antibiotics are no longer available OTC, so your clients who own or breed reptiles or fish, bees, etc. are no longer able to easily get these drugs from the internet, co-op, or feed stores. They may be asking you to establish a VFD for them to be able to use antibiotics.
Dr. Averill is also willing to answer any questions you may have!
We hope to see you there!
